In her free time if she’s not taxiing the children to one of their many sports, you’ll find Lizzy in a paddock chasing animals, soaking up the beautiful Aotearoa landscape—or running the local swimclub.
LORE GEENEVASEN (MVS)

JO THOMSON
Veterinary Technician & AB Technician
Jo is a true all-rounder at Putaruru Veterinary Services, stepping in as a casual tech whenever needed and bringing plenty of hands-on know-how from running her own farm with her partner. With extra skills as an Artificial Breeding (AB) Technician, Jo blends practical farming experience with technical expertise to support vets and clients alike. Reliable, adaptable, and always ready to lend a hand, Jo helps keep things running smoothly and ensures animals get the best care possible.
And being a farmer, Jo will tell you—free time doesn’t really exist! But when she can, it’s all about family and life on the land.
MICK & TIM
Stock control and Lolly-bag Managers
Mick and Tim are the extra hands that make life easier at Putaruru Veterinary Services when they’re not at school. You’ll spot them getting calves in line during disbudding, spraying teat spray at drying off, whipping up the famous lolly bags, and making sure there’s a snack ready for those morning medication pick-ups. They’re also the ones hosing out the shed when the work’s done—keeping everything clean and ready for the next job.
And even though they’re only kids, they take their job very seriously—leaving lists of what needs ordering, helping with stocktake, grabbing grass samples for spore counts, and even learning their way around the lab. These two are always keen to pitch in and bring plenty of energy (and a bit of fun) to every job!
Ellie and Alfie
Putaruru Vets’ Chief Security Officers
Presenting Putaruru Vets’ fearsome security duo: Ellie & Alfie. Viciously dedicated to sunbathing and professional cuddle‑dispensing. Pet Ellie at your own risk—she will immediately glue herself to your leg and treat your pat as a legally binding contract to never leave your side.
Alfie, meanwhile, boasts the long body of a small freight train and the short legs of someone who absolutely should not be able to move that fast—Dobermann, Bullmastiff and Jack Russell energy all wrestling for control in one magnificent posture. Special skills include snoring on duty and expertly locating those lost chips under your car seat if you leave the door open for half a second. Please approach with caution — they’re highly effective at recruiting new friends.
ABOUT US
At Putaruru Veterinary Services, we’re proud to be part of the local farming community. Our team is dedicated to keeping herds healthy and productive—because we know that healthy cows are the foundation of a thriving dairy business. From herd‑health plans to emergency call‑outs, we’re here to support farmers every step of the way.
Putaruru Vets isn’t just a clinic—it’s family. Axel and Lizzy grew up around animals, so caring for them comes naturally. After years working in a larger vet group, they wanted something closer to home—something local, personal, and truly connected to the community.
In May 2023, with the kids cheering them on, they brought the Putaruru Vets name back to life. Local farmers needed a vet team that understood the land, the people, and the realities of rural life. With vets in short supply and demand continuing to grow, Axel and Lizzy saw an opportunity to build something genuinely local: a practice grounded in relationships, experience, and a love for farming.
In October 2023, Lore joined the team as our second veterinarian. She brought fresh energy and expertise, helping us respond faster, take on more farm calls, and deliver even more personalised care. Lore’s passion for rural practice and commitment to animal health strengthened our ability to serve the South Waikato community.
In April 2025, we opened the doors to our official shop—and welcomed Annelies to the team. Clients can pop in between 9am and 4pm to drop off samples, pick up supplies, or simply enjoy a hot cuppa and a yarn. It’s a space where you’re always welcome, whether you need animal health products or just a friendly chat.
Today, Putaruru Veterinary Services is here for the big jobs—keeping herds healthy and productive—and the little ones, like caring for the working dogs and on‑farm small animals that are part of daily farming life. We’re proud to be your local, independent veterinary team.
Community commitment
Supporting our community is a big part of who we are. At Putaruru Veterinary Services, we’re proud to back the next generation of South Waikato talent—both on the field and beyond it. We support a wide range of local youth sports and community groups, including the Putaruru Rugby Club, Putaruru Amateur Swimming Club, Swim Waipa, and our local schools Waotu and Lichfield.
You’ll also find us at calf‑club days, Group Day, and cheering on the local students involved in college clay shooting. Each year, we proudly support the Pride in Putaruru Farmers’ Night, celebrating the people who make this community such a great place to live and farm.
Being part of Putaruru means backing the young people, families, and farmers who shape our region—and we’re proud to play our part.
